Deep Water a poem by Justin Tuijl 2016

Deep Water

“You should get a real job,” he said.
I’d rather watch the water
Now smooth, now rough
Birds swimming, diving
“There is no money in it.”
I had no food the other day
Today I eat an apple
and toss the core into the water
A seagull flies over, picks it up,
and drops it in disgust.
“If you drink water you don’t want to eat.”
The water from the tap tastes like shit
Probably is shit
A grebe surfaces with a fish, gobbles it down
Then dives again
“You need to get a life.”
And look at these things
That we can have
Two seagulls fight
and soar quickly away
far away over the water
